CROWNING, or how to change shape while remembering your name

Born in 2020 & active from 2020-2024 through multiple iterations, CROWNING, or how to change shape while remembering your name is an interactive scavenger hunt following city water ways back to open ocean.

Audience participants follow one of four city kid nature spirits—SUGAR, SLINGSHOT, GATITO & RUST—(…)

  • through cityscapes from Brooklyn to Queens to the BX, moving through each charater’s specific, geo-located audio-scape (original text & music & found audio), scanning landmarks to unlock video mapped into the contours of the city & encountering live performance.

CROWNING was created in deep collaboration with Carissa Matsushima (sound design), &, in later iterations, a vibrant contellation of artists including Neha Gautam, Ezra Richards, Queerly Femmetastic, Johnnie Cruise Mercer, Cleopatra Jach Acquaye-Reynolds, Fana Fraser, Anastacia Bolina & stefa marin alarcon.

CROWNING was created with support from Hi-ARTS, pepatían/BAAD!’s dancing futures, culture push, Brooklyn Arts Council, and the BAAD! muser residency.
